If you're about to install a ViewRail cable railing system, a glass railing, or a ViewRail floating stairs kit, the best time to find a problem is before you start installation. I use a checklist on every order that comes through my department. I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a railing systems company. I review every custom railing order before it ships—roughly 400 unique items a year. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected 9% of first deliveries because of dimensional mismatches, finish defects, or incomplete paperwork.
This checklist takes about 15 minutes per railing order. It won't make a bad product good, but it will keep a small problem from turning into a redo.

You'll need the product drawings, a tape measure, a caliper, and a level.
There are six steps. Do them in order. The first three are the longest because they're the cheapest to fix.
Step 1: Match the part numbers to the spec sheet
Don't assume “cable railing” is one product. ViewRail Systems uses different posts, cables, and connectors for different rail heights and mounting conditions. A rail for a floating stair is not the same as a rail for a level deck.
Open the packing slip, open each box, and read the labels. Check model numbers, finish code, and post heights. In 2022, I caught an order that had the right rail but the wrong post height. The vendor offered a discount to make it work. We returned it. The customer needed code-compliant railing, and 2 inches of post height is not a cosmetic detail.
Step 2: Measure the things that are easy to fudge
Take measurements before you start assembly. It's the most boring part of the job, but it's the one that prevents the most expensive surprises.
- Overall rail length. It must match your span after the posts are installed, not before.
- Post base plate dimensions and slot positions. If the anchor bolt template is off by 1/8 inch, you're drilling into concrete a second time.
- Cable diameter. If the spec says 1/8 inch, a 3/32 inch cable will feel tight and then stretch.
- Glass panel edge dimensions. A panel that is 1/4 inch short can rattle; one that's 1/4 inch long can't be installed.
- Tread thickness on floating stairs. Check the actual tread, not the nominal thickness. Thin treads crack at the stringer connection.
Use a digital caliper. They cost about $20. If a quote is a few hundred dollars lower, ask what tolerance the price is based on. The lowest bid isn't necessarily a bad deal, but it's a bad deal if it comes with looser tolerances.
From experience managing several hundred orders, the lowest quote has cost us more in about 60% of cases when you count the redo. That $200 savings turned into a $1,500 problem when a post base didn't match the anchor template and we had to core drill concrete twice.
Step 3: Inspect the finish under bright, angled light
Photographs on a screen make every railing look perfect. The reality is that a poor finish shows up as soon as sunlight hits it.
Hold each rail at an angle to a light source. Look for:
- Heat discoloration around welds.
- Scratches in the brushed stainless grain direction.
- Uneven powder coating, especially at edges and drilled holes.
- Rust bloom on cut ends.
People assume finish quality is the same across vendors. It isn't. One vendor may use 304 stainless; another may use the same grade but grind the weld with too coarse a grit. Both look fine in a photo. They don't look fine in person.
If the system includes post caps, check the cap profile too. I've seen job notes call for a “scally cap”—usually a low, rounded cap—but that's a shorthand, not a standard specification. Ask for the exact drawing dimension and check that the cap sits flush and overlaps evenly. A cap that's 1/16 inch off can collect water or look crooked from the street.
I don't have hard data on how many field callbacks involve post caps, but based on the returns I've reviewed, cap fit is in the top five.
Step 4: Check the hardware kit before you cut anything
This is the step most contractors skip, because hardware bags are usually sealed and look complete. Open them anyway.
Count the bolts, swage studs, cable thimbles, washers, and set screws. Verify the thread pitch on one bolt and one nut. A lot of railing systems use metric thread pitches. If you lose a set screw and go to the local hardware store, you will find that “close enough” is not a railing product.
Also check how the hardware is packed. Loose fasteners inside a box can scratch powder-coated posts during shipping. I implemented a packaging check in 2022 that requires hardware kits to be sealed and labeled. It reduced missing-part complaints by about 34% in the first year.
Step 5: Dry fit one bay before you install everything
You don't have to install the whole railing to find out whether it's square. Dry fit one end post, one intermediate post, and one rail section. Check level and square, then run one cable tension test. On a floating stair kit, dry fit one tread assembly on the stringer before you glue and screw.
This step takes 20 minutes. It can save an entire week of rework.
People think a modular system is faster because there are fewer parts. Actually, a modular system is faster only if the parts are exactly the right ones and the mounting surface is square. The modularity does not fix the wall or the concrete slab. That's why the dry fit exists.
Step 6: Verify the glass edge quality before you peel the film
For glass railing systems, the most dangerous defect is not on the surface; it's on the edge. A tiny chip in the glass edge can turn into a crack after the panel is installed and the building starts moving. Inspect all four edges on every glass panel. Run your eye down the edge in bright light. If you see a chip, set the panel aside and call the supplier before installation.
If your glass panels come with a protective film, treat it like the Zagg screen protector on your phone—it's meant to absorb scratches during handling, not to hide a damaged edge. The film comes off, and then the defect is yours.
For any glass railing with safety glazing requirements, ask for the test report. In the US, that usually means ANSI Z97.1 compliance documentation. For the railing height and baluster spacing, the relevant rules are in the IBC or IRC depending on the project. If the supplier can't produce the document, that's a red flag no matter what the price quote says.
Notes and common mistakes
Here are the mistakes I see when an order comes back to the shop.
- Starting installation before checking the drawings. The drawing is the contract. If the supplied system doesn't match, stop and document it.
- Choosing the quote instead of the total cost. The total cost includes the time you spend measuring, returning parts, re-drilling, and waiting. A redo always costs more than checking.
- Ignoring paperwork. If you need a fire rating or seismic approval, ask for the specific certificate. Don't assume the product is approved because the catalog says “guardrail.”
- Assuming “adjustable” means “infinitely adjustable.” Some railing systems allow a 5-degree adjustment; others allow 2 degrees. Know which one you have.
- Forgetting to test the cable tension before final termination. Cable stretches. Tighten it, wait a day, retighten it.
Bottom line
I don't have a published study on industry-wide defect rates for cable railing, but based on the orders we've handled over the past few years, my sense is that quality issues show up in about 8–12% of first deliveries when the spec isn't checked at the receiving end. If you add in the install side, that number goes higher.
The goal is to catch the problem before it becomes a redo.
