ViewRail Floating Stairs: A Buyer's Checklist for Non-Engineers

I'm the office administrator at a 200-person firm, which means I buy a little bit of everything. I've called Glass Doctor for a cracked storefront, priced butcher block countertop options for the break room, and once looked up how to make smooth stone in Minecraft because a designer asked me to “source custom stone blocks” for a client presentation. (I did not find the answer, and that is fine.)

But none of that prepared me for buying ViewRail floating stairs for our lobby renovation. When I started that project, I assumed a stair system was like any other finish product: get three quotes, pick the middle one, move on. It isn't. Floating stairs are structural. That lesson came after one supplier's quote came in $18,000 below everyone else—and didn't include the steel stringer, the railing, or the floor reinforcement we later learned was necessary.

So this is the checklist I wish someone had handed me. It's written for another non-engineer who needs to buy a ViewRail floating stair or cable railing system and doesn't want to learn the hard way. Six steps, mostly practical.

Step 1: Get the building details before you contact a supplier

I know this sounds boring. Do it anyway.

The first question isn't “which tread color looks good.” The first question is “what does the building allow.” Floating stairs hang off the structure. If the floor is post-tensioned concrete, thin slab, or wood-framed, your options change fast. You need the structural drawings or a professional assessment before you get a useful quote. Without those, any price is a guess.

We learned that our lobby slab didn't have enough thickness for the anchor system ViewRail's floating stair package required. That wasn't a product problem, but it became our problem. We paid for a structural engineer review and an extra three weeks—okay, closer to five weeks—before the design worked.

The question everyone asks is “which stair kit looks best?” The question they should ask is “what does the existing structure let us do?” That's the blind spot I see most often.

Step 2: Know what a modular system includes—and what it doesn't

ViewRail makes modular cable railing and stair systems. Modular is great: components arrive ready to assemble, which shortens install time compared to custom fabrication. But “modular” does not mean there's no design work.

Ask the supplier to break down the quote. Does it include:

  • stair stringers or a steel spine
  • treads and the finish on them
  • cable railing, posts, and hardware
  • mounting brackets and fasteners
  • structural engineering or PE stamp, if required

If a quote only says “floating stair kit,” that is a red flag. That phrase can leave out half the project. The most honest salesperson I spoke with said, “This isn't our strength—here's who does it better.” That candor built trust for everything else.

Also, if anyone tells you the system needs no skilled labor, walk away. A railing system on a staircase holds real weight. I don't care if it's modular. You need an installer who knows what they're doing.

Step 3: Ask for the test data and certifications

“Strong,” “durable,” and “certified” are not the same thing. For metal railing systems, ask whether the system has been tested to something like ASTM E935, which covers permanent metal railing systems and rails. Ask for the report, not just a brochure page. If a product is claimed to be fire-rated or seismic-approved, there should be a certification to back it up. If they can't produce one, do not take that risk.

I have mixed feelings about this part. I don't love getting deep into engineering. But after one project where we skipped the PE stamp because “the city will catch it,” I learned that doesn't work. The city reviews what you submit. If you submit an under-engineered system, it can stop the whole job.

And if a vendor makes an environmental claim—“our wood is sustainable” or “this tread is recyclable”—ask for the documentation. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental claims need to be substantiated. Same principle applies to safety claims, in my opinion.

Step 4: Price the whole system, not just the pretty stair

The first quote we got for the stair components alone looked fine. Then we added structural steel, installation, cable railing, finishes, and the engineer review. The final number was more than we originally planned. I'm not 100% sure we could have avoided all of it, but we should have asked earlier about:

  • freight and delivery access (a stair system does not arrive via USPS; it comes on a freight truck)
  • liftgate or crane service, if the site needs it
  • installation labor and supervision
  • engineering and permit fees
  • temporary protection or storage if the site isn't ready

Rush fees follow the usual pattern too: if you need the schedule compressed, expect a premium. In our case, expediting the install added about 20% to the labor quote. Maybe it was closer to 15%, I'd have to check the change order. Either way, it wasn't zero.

Step 5: Confirm who installs it and who owns the problems

This is where “ViewRail systems” can get confusing. The manufacturer supplies the parts. Some projects have the manufacturer's recommended installer. Others use a local contractor. We chose a local crew with prior ViewRail experience. That worked well, but I could also see the appeal of a factory-recommended installer. The important thing is to know who to call when something goes wrong.

Ask about the warranty in writing. Does it cover the finish? The moving parts? Structural components? Labor if a defect appears? Also ask for proof of insurance from whoever is installing it.

A note on glass: if your project includes glass railings, the glass is often outside the stair package. Our stair vendor recommended a separate glass contractor for the tempered panels. A vendor who tells you “we don't do that, here's a specialist” is more trustworthy than one who says “yeah, sure, we do it all.”

Step 6: Get references from projects that look like yours

“We've done 500 stairs” means nothing if none of them are in a commercial office lobby with heavy foot traffic. Ask for references that match your building type, scale, and design. Then call them and ask: What wasn't in the original quote? What would you do differently? Would you use this system again?

One reference mentioned that the glass panels came from a separate fabricator and arrived two weeks late. That gave us time to structure the schedule so we weren't surprised. It also confirmed that the stair package itself was easy to work with.

Some things to watch out for:

  • Getting started too late. Custom steel components take time. Our lead time was about eight weeks, maybe nine including engineering.
  • Assuming local codes don't apply. Check with your building department. Guard load requirements vary by jurisdiction.
  • Choosing a supplier who claims to handle everything. In my experience, specialists who know their limits are safer than generalists who overpromise.
