I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a railing systems company. When an order comes through for a Viewrail product, I review it before it ships—roughly 200 orders a year, maybe 180, depending on how you count partial shipments. Over four years, I've seen the same small omissions turn a clean order into a change order. This is the exact checklist I use.
When I first started in this role, I assumed material cost was the main cost. A few expensive reorders later, I learned that the real cost lives in the details nobody writes down.

Use this if you're pricing a Viewrail cable railing system for a deck, a stairway, or an interior mezzanine. It's for contractors, designers, and owners who are doing their own procurement. It doesn't replace a structural engineer or your local authority having jurisdiction.
There are seven steps. Each one ends with a check point.
Step 1: Measure the Actual Run, Not the Deck Area
The first mistake happens before any price conversation. Deck square footage does not tell you how much railing you need. A 20x20 deck could have a simple 20-foot railing run or a 60-foot run with four turns, depending on the house. Walk the railing path and measure along the top rail. Mark every post location. On a Viewrail system, post spacing affects the cable span and the structural rating. A drawing that says 'approx. 50 lin ft' is not enough.
Check point: You have a measured linear run with post locations and corner angles.
Step 2: Choose Cable or Glass Infill Before Pricing
If you're comparing a full open cable run against glass panels, you're not comparing the same product. Cable gives you an unobstructed view and a lighter look. Glass gives you wind protection, more privacy, and a different maintenance profile. For exterior decks, glass can also reduce noise and block wind-driven debris. Neither is inherently better; they just change the bill of materials and installation time.
Check point: The quote says cable infill or glass infill, not just 'railing.'
Step 3: Count Posts and Hardware, Not Just Linear Feet
This is where 'Viewrail cost' gets tricky. Two projects with the same linear footage can have different post counts. A straight 40-foot run with posts every 5 feet needs 9 posts. A 40-foot run with a corner and a landing needs 10 or 11 posts, plus more anchors and brackets. Every post adds a base bracket, a post cap, installation labor, and sometimes a deck reinforcement cost underneath. The lowest per-foot price can lose to a higher per-foot price if the second quote includes all the posts.
Check point: Your parts list includes a post count that matches your drawing.
Step 4: Know Your Cable Runs and Terminations
Long cable runs are not the same as short runs. Continuous runs need tensioning hardware. Intermediate spans may need more attachment points. If the railing follows a staircase, each cable length increases because of the slope—this is an easy measurement to miss. I'm not sure why this detail gets skipped so often. My best guess is that people look at a straight horizontal deck railing and assume stairs work the same way. They don't.
Also check the deck framing under each post. A rail post bolted only to a deck board will fail. If the deck structure has to be reinforced, that is part of the railing cost.
Check point: Each cable run length is listed separately for straight, corner, and stair sections.
Step 5: Specify Post Caps and Glass Details Before You Compare Prices
This is the step I see skipped most. On a drawing, a post cap is a post cap. In the manufacturing schedule, a flat cap and a newsboy cap are different parts with different tooling and different part numbers.
Same for glass. If your stair railing needs a glass panel whose top edge follows the stair angle, that's not a rectangle. On some systems it's specified as coupe glass—a glass infill panel with an angled top cut. If the drawing shows that but the quote doesn't name it, someone will be surprised later.
When I implemented our verification protocol in 2022, we started flagging every order where the cap profile or glass cut wasn't written out. Roughly 1 in 8 first deliveries in 2024 needed a rework because one of these details was missing. That number should be zero.
Check point: The quote names the exact post cap profile and the exact glass cut type.
Step 6: Compare Total Delivered Cost, Not the Lowest Quote
I'm not going to tell you to spend more than you need. I am going to tell you that the lowest quote can become the most expensive one. One order we reviewed came in $900 lower than the nearest competitor. The cheap quote didn't include post caps. Adding the caps and freight brought the total above the other quote. The buyer wasn't trying to hide costs—they just didn't list line items.
That's a small example. I've also seen a $200 cap change turn into a $2,300 project delay when the wrong cap was installed and the railing had to be pulled off the wall. The cheapest quote is not the cheapest project.
I used to think rush fees were just vendors gouging customers. Then I saw the operational reality of expedited service: reprioritizing a production line, pulling extra stock, and paying for faster freight. It costs money. In hindsight, I should have ordered earlier. But when the schedule is set, paying for speed is sometimes the right call.
Check point: Every quote has the same part-numbered line items, including freight and finish.
Step 7: Add Labor and Lead Time
A kit that saves $300 but sits on site for two weeks waiting for a replacement part costs more than a kit that shows up complete. Lead time is part of cost. Installation labor is part of cost. Deck reinforcement is part of cost. When a contractor tells me they got the railing cheaper, I ask about total installed cost. That number is the one that matters.
Check point: You have a delivered date and an estimated installation time in the plan.
Three Mistakes That Turn a Good Quote Into a Bad Project
1. Relying on price per foot. A per-foot price hides post count, caps, glass cuts, anchors, and freight. Use a complete bill of materials. If the supplier doesn't provide one, ask for it before you calculate savings.
2. Assuming all cable is the same. Cable gauge, material, and spacing are not cosmetic details. Local code usually sets the dimension of the opening between cables. Confirm your chosen system meets that requirement.
3. Ordering before field measurements are final. A 20-post order changed to 21 posts because someone forgot a stair landing means reorder freight. Reorder freight is not cheap.
A Note on My Experience
My experience is based on about 200 orders, mostly residential and light commercial. If your project is a large commercial structure, or if it requires fire-resistance and seismic approval, do not rely on this checklist alone. You need an engineer who reviews the local codes.
