The Two Things I Check Before Every Viewrail Systems Order (After $12,800 in Mistakes)

Mistake 2 — The Shower Valve Rough-In Nobody Re-Drew

2023. We were anchoring an aluminum screen frame on an exterior wall of a townhome unit. My crew drilled based on the architectural elevation. Nobody mentioned the shower valve rough-in that had been re-routed behind that wall two weeks earlier by the plumbing sub.

We hit the valve body on the fourth anchor.

Repair: $740. Delay: four days, waiting on the plumbing inspector and a drywall cure. The plumber's change order went to the GC, who billed it back to us—because our drill location was "not field-verified."

Now, on any wet-wall penetration, I get a signed coordination sheet from the plumbing contractor before my guys pick up a hammer drill. No signed sheet, no drilling. Simple.

Mistake 3 — Treating "How to Make Brown Paint" as a Digital Problem

Late 2023. A client wanted a bronze-brown finish on stair stringers, matched to a terracotta exterior. I sent the powder coater a hex code and assumed we were aligned.

The frames came back roughly eight RAL shades off. Too red, not enough brown. The designer rejected the first batch outright.

Fix: two powder coat cycles, $2,900 in refinishing, ten days of schedule slip.
