How One Bad Cable Railing Order Changed the Way I Quote Every ViewRail Project
In September 2022, I submitted a cable railing order that looked perfect on my screen. Seven days later, I was standing in a half-finished stairwell with a stack of glass panels that did not fit. That was the day I stopped treating the quote as a parts list and started treating it as a system.

The cleanup

The post caps were a simpler fix—order four flat caps and swap them out. But the caps had to be powdercoated to match, so it wasn't a one-day turnaround. Another week, another $340 in shipping.
The cable sag needed a field adjustment. That one was less expensive, but it required a second visit from the installation crew and a separate trip to inspect the tension. Add another $480.
Total waste on that job: about $1,800 and a two-week delay. Plus the credibility hit. The contractor didn't yell. That was somehow worse.
What I do now: the pre-check list
After the third expensive mistake that year, I created a checklist. It's split into four questions I ask before every railing order:
- Is any glass curved? If “watch glass” or “bent glass” appears in the drawings, I stop and get shop-drawing signoff before I order.
- What does the post cap actually look like? If the drawing says “flat,” “fabricated,” or “grad cap,” I don't assume it's the standard cap. I add the exact cap spec to the PO.
- Are the posts locked in? I verify stud locations with the structural drawings and mark the cable termination points before ordering.
- What is the real ViewRail cost per connection? I estimate by connection, not by linear foot. It's slower, but it's been accurate within about 5% since I started.
